Maintenance hiring in South Africa runs on trade qualifications. Understanding what those qualifications mean, and where they stop being useful, saves a great deal of time and prevents some expensive appointments.
What the red seal actually is
A red seal is issued when a candidate passes a national trade test for a listed trade such as millwright, electrician, fitter and turner, diesel mechanic or boilermaker. It is a national standard, which is why employers value it. It confirms that the person met a recognised benchmark at a recognised test centre.
It does not confirm that the person has kept current, that they have worked on your equipment, or that they can lead a shift. Those are separate questions and they need separate evidence.
Checks worth doing every time
- Verify the trade certificate through the issuing authority rather than accepting a copy
- Confirm the trade matches the work, since a fitter and a millwright are not interchangeable
- Ask for the specific equipment and control systems the person has maintained
- Check any additional statutory appointments the role requires
- Look for evidence of planned maintenance discipline, not only breakdown response
Qualified is not the same as suitable
The strongest maintenance appointments usually come down to three things beyond the certificate. Can the person diagnose properly instead of replacing parts until the fault disappears? Do they record what they did so that the next person benefits? Will they follow a planned maintenance schedule when production is pushing them to skip it?
Ask candidates to walk you through a failure they investigated from symptom to root cause. The quality of that answer separates a competent artisan from a genuinely valuable one very quickly.
Building the team, not just filling the post
Plants that hire well in maintenance tend to run a deliberate mix of experienced artisans, developing artisans and apprentices, and they plan for the fact that their best people are being approached by other employers. If your entire reliability knowledge sits with one person who is close to retirement, that is a hiring risk you should be managing this year rather than next.
