Key account management is one of the hardest FMCG roles to benchmark, because two people with the same job title can carry completely different responsibility. One manages a single regional chain. The other holds a national group account worth a meaningful share of company turnover. The pay reflects that gap, not the years on the CV.
What drives the number
- Which retail groups the person actually holds, and at what level they are received
- Annual value of the portfolio and the margin risk attached to it
- Whether trade spend and promotional budget sit with the role
- Category complexity, especially where chilled, frozen or short shelf life stock is involved
- Whether the role carries direct reports or is an individual contributor
How packages are usually built
Most South African FMCG employers structure key account pay as a total cost to company base plus a performance incentive, a car allowance or company vehicle and a fuel and travel allowance. The incentive is typically tied to volume, value and trade spend discipline, and it commonly represents a meaningful portion of realistic annual earnings.
When you compare offers, compare total realistic earnings rather than base salary alone. A lower base with a well designed incentive often beats a higher base with an incentive nobody has ever achieved.
Where the market is tight
Demand is strongest for people who genuinely hold buyer relationships at the major national groups and who can evidence listings won, ranging protected and promotional margin defended. That group is small, they are almost all employed, and they are approached regularly. If you want one of them, your process needs to be quick and your offer needs to be serious.
Candidates moving from a supplier to a retailer, or from a smaller brand to a national one, usually accept a smaller increase in return for the account exposure. That works once. It does not work twice.
Practical advice for employers
Publish a band internally before you start. Decide what you will pay for the person who ticks every box, and decide what you will pay for the person who is eighty percent there and will grow. Searches stall most often because nobody made that decision at the beginning.
